The journey of Education from Scriptures to Blackboard and now to the White screens.
The story of India’s education system is truly a fascinating one. Education that was systematized and organized has its roots in the ancient days in our subcontinent. This article shall take you on a trip down the ancient and medieval eras to see how education actually evolved in India.
Ancient India and the birth of Education
The education in this era is believed to be the most systematized and dates back to the 3rd century B.C. when mythological and traditional knowledge was the main source of learning. The writing was done on palm trees and tree barks when sages and scholars were reciting shlokas. One of the best education systems that derived in this ancient era was the ‘Gurukul’. The ideology behind this structure is imbibed in many of the schools in the present-day scenario too. Gurukul meant enhancing a blended and continuous learning approach. It needed the student and teacher to stay together under one roof to keep learning at all times of the day. Religious texts, warfare techniques, medicinal studies, and astrology were the main subjects taught in a gurukul.
Medieval India’s Education
The medieval era was witness to the dynamic beginning of universities like Nalanda University, Takshashila University, and Vikramshila University. The subjects turned a bit more concrete like astronomy, grammar, philosophy, literature, mathematics, law, logic, etc. Each University was specializing in one subject. This era too noticed emerging libraries in the country.
Current academics in Modern India
Modern India had to imbibe the English language more than
any other language due to British rule over the country. The current education
system is the one designed and proposed in the 20th century by Lord Macaulay.
With the start of the 21st century, came education policies of the right to
free and compulsory education for children till 14 years of age. The country
had seen a set pattern of reforms in education, until the outbreak of the
pandemic. The pandemic that struck India in March 2020 has created a huge
paradigm shift in education. The blackboards have been replaced by white
screens. The complete education system has been revolutionized due to schools
being shut.
