Devshayani Ekadashi or most commonly known as Aashadhi Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious occasions that marks the onset of the Chaturmas period. Especially in the state of Maharashtra, pilgrims aka “warkaris” celebrate this occasion by walking from all regions over the state to Pandharpur in Solapur district on foot (wari) chanting “Vithal Vithal, Jai Hari Vithal” to offer their gratitude to Lord Vithal Rukmini.

It is also believed that fasting on this day with devotion will lead to a happy, successful, and peaceful life. Thus, we bring to you a lesser known, ancient recipe for fasting from the Maharashtrian traditions, just for you!

Let’s make “Konfal Valya” or Konfal balls. For that we require a couple of fresh Konfals or Indian Purple Yam known as Kand or Kandh in Hindi and Konfal in Marathi. This tuber belongs to the large family of Yams. It has a unique texture, a bright purple colour, is sweet to taste and has a lot of health benefits.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 fresh Indian Purple Yam or Konfal
  • 1 cup of grinded groundnut paste(dry)
  • 2-3 chopped green chillies
  • 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup jaggery
  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil

Procedure

Start by rinsing and scrubbing the Konfals with water to wash off any excess mud or dirt. Put these in a pressure cooker, fill with water, add a little salt, and place on the stove on a high flame. After the first whistle, cook for about 10 more minutes. Once removed, peel the outer skin, cut and smash them together in a bowl into a soft dough texture. Now take a small ball of this dough, make a katori and stuff it with a filling of groundnuts with some added green chilly, salt and lemon or a sweet filling of jaggery and coconut into it. Make it into balls and fry it in oil on medium flame until done. Voila! You have your Yam Balls or “Upvasache Konfal Valya” ready for your fasting on Aashadhi Ekadashi.
